go 2 neighborhood swap meets -flea markets- there will be numerous inexpensive eye catchers to find-like a mirror and possibly a shelf and you can get flowers for shelf to add color
Surround yourself with things that you like. For a family room, make sure that the seating accommodate everyone and encourages conversation. Adding chairs by the window allows you to have your own private retreat. Decorating is very personal and should be done by you, only you know what you like- so surround yourself with that, and have fun, it is a great way to express your creativity.
Theme, I really love a nautical theme because you can totally create a beachlike atmosphere. It is so pretty, and so calming. I like to take a tall vase, put sand in the bottom, shells on top and then a big starfish just to fill the vase. They make very pretty decor, plus you can get cd’s with ocean sounds or soft music, palm trees, tiki lights… i love the ocean for house decoration.
Check out hgtv.com They have a quiz you can take to find out which style of design suits you best.
plants are always a good way to add life and color to a room . nice curtains and throw pillows help. ikea is a great place to shop for cheap home decor. a nice mirror adds space and intrest to any wall. candles are great(but if your like me you don’t have time to light a whole bunch of candles and then worry about burning your house down) or you could buy some of the lite decors thier like night light but grown up kinds. gl with your room if i had more info to go by i would be more useful.

I painted miscellaneous walls in warm neutral tones. It gave it a less bland and more inviting updated look.
